A DEEP PURPLE SHADE OF HARD ROCK
By Gary R. Blockus
The Morning Call
Forget that their most memorable music was created in the 1970s.
Deep Purple rocked a crowd of 4,800 at RiverPlace during Musikfest on Thursday night, jamming to motor heads, metal heads, grandparents and children despite the facility being just over two-thirds full.
From an eerie keyboard-driven overture that segued perfectly into “Pictures of Home” to the eight-minute version of “Hush” that served as the encore, lead singerIan Gillan and friends proved they are still relevant today with a high-energy, musically solid performance.
Gillan’s trademark screeches sounded out loud and clear.
He showed his range and emotion on “Things I Never Said” and stretched it even more on “Strange Kind of Woman.”
